Air travel costs in Nigeria reached new highs in 2026 due to updated tax reforms. For students, moving between home and university now requires a smart financial strategy. This guide details how you can access exclusive student fares and reduce your travel expenses this year.
Available Student Discounts for 2026
While many domestic airlines offer general promos, specific student frameworks are still evolving. Here is what you need to know about the current market:
- Air Peace Student Offer: Air Peace remains a leader in education-focused travel. They provide a 15% discount on economy tickets for students flying between Nigeria and London. This offer includes an extra baggage allowance, which is vital for students moving for the semester.
- International Student Identity Card (ISIC): This is your most powerful tool. An ISIC card unlocks “hidden” student fares on platforms like StudentUniverse and Travelstart Nigeria. Many international carriers operating in Nigeria, such as Qatar Airways and Lufthansa, accept this card for discounted rates and flexible booking dates.
- Domestic Promo Tiers: Most local airlines like Green Africa and United Nigeria Airlines do not have a permanent “student” button on their websites. Instead, they use “Saver” or “Promo” tiers. As a student, you should book these tiers at least four weeks in advance to get rates starting around N95,000.
How to Verify Your Student Status
Airlines require proof before they slash prices. Prepare these documents to avoid issues at check-in:
- Valid Student ID Card: It must show your name, photo, and a current expiry date.
- Admission Letter: Useful for first-year students who do not have an ID card yet.
- Enrollment Verification: A signed letter from your registrar or a current semester fee receipt.
- Age Limit: Most student discounts in Nigeria apply only to those aged 12 to 25.
Tips to Lower Your Flight Costs
- Fly Mid-Week: Tuesdays and Wednesdays are the cheapest days to fly within Nigeria. Avoid Friday evening and Sunday afternoon flights, as these are peak times for workers and families.
- Use Incognito Mode: Airline websites track your searches. Use private browsing to ensure you see the lowest possible price every time you refresh the page.
- Baggage Awareness: United Nigeria Airlines offers 20kg in economy, while others offer 15kg. If you are carrying heavy books or food items, choose the airline with the higher weight limit to avoid paying N1,000 per extra kg.
